Most of the game is played in the first-person view through Samus's visor, which offers both heads-up display and scanner abilities, but Samus can also roll up into a ball to negotiate tight spots. What's really cool is that the game shifts to a third-person trailing perspective in this mode, which helps refresh the gameplay. Metroid Prime has some original weapons, such as the grapple beam, wave beam, and freeze beam, and the Big N is promising loads of others, too. The game looked great at the show, but we didn't have enough time to really get used to the controls. --Porter B. Hall From the Manufacturer One of the most daring characters in video-game history is back and primed to battle the legendary Space Pirates in Nintendo's stunning first-person epic Metroid Prime. Samus must thread through wreckage, elude spark-spewing power lines and blast scuttling creatures before descending to even greater challenges on the mysterious planet below. Adding a unique third-person twist is the morph ball. At the touch of a button, Samus rolls up into a ball to activate switches, navigate cramped passages... read more See all editorial reviews... The games controls are splendid! After playing FPS's, I thought I'd never get used to Prime. I was totally wrong, my hands just moved to the position where they where most comfortable. What I wanted it to do it did. Although the (A) button for fire sounded awkward, my digits would be able to blast the little blighters with ease. Many game companies view controls as a menial problem, that's why no one was used to hearing, "Jump with (B)" Graphics are awesome! Every little detail from mist to condensation is epecially made so that it never looks the same. Real life physics improve the graphics factor greatly. You never jump too high or too fast, wind blows actual 3D rendered grains of sand, even water movements are looked at. Gameplay is more exciting than you would expect. YOU WILL NOT repeat the same type of task. YOU WILL encounter new things every second of you gaming experience. YOU WILL NOT encounter another game like this. Another thing, the game IS NOT too hard or too easy. Mistakes people make are that this is not a FPS. It is an adventure/puzzle/logic/common sense/metroid game. My friends and I would sit around for hours trying to figure out how to navigate Samus around the planet Zebes. Imagine our surprise when we found out that Samus was a woman!!! When I heard about Metroid being released as a FPS style game my heart almost sank. After I read all the hype, my hopes began to rise. Then I bought myself a Gamecube for x-mas--Metroid Prime as well of course--and I almost started to cry. This game has blown away my expectations and made me wonder if the team at Nintendo doesn't have a direct line to god. From the subtle Metroid music, to the creepy noises coming from behind you (if you can't play this in surround, you're missing one of the best parts). From the sun shining in your eyes as you scan an area, to the visor being blanked out as some "thing" smacks into your face, this game is like being Samus Aran. I think the biggest surprise is the controls. For the majority of the gameplay, the controller is very easy to manipulate (though I fire a missile once in awhile when trying to jump). But you can also do some neat tricks if your hands can handle a few complex maneuvers (try jumping and targeting something on the ground nearby for starters). And when it comes to platforms, this game isn't harder than any 2-D platformer I've played, and in some cases even easier. The puzzles to solve ways around rooms are one of the best additions though. Even though you had to complete some simpler tasks in previous versions of Metroid, Prime takes it a step further. One example is where you have to move some platforms via a switch, and go jump on the platforms to access the next switch. There are also doors that can only be opened by activating runes. The monsters are also done well and give a bit of nostalgia. The coolest of which I've seen so far are the Skrees (you remember the things that drop from the ceiling in previous versions?). Not only will they drop down on you from above, but will also fly toward you from across the room. You can also shoot them from across the room so it makes up for it. Combat is fairly easy, some more complex maneuvers are required if you want to save energy though. Last but not least of course is the same type of gameplay where by you must find items and go back to explore in-accessible areas later. This holds very true to the 2-D versions and then some. If you are a Metroid fan and haven't bought this game: Go out and by it right now. If you aren't a Metroid fan, but like a twist on an FPS (I've heard this called a FP Platformer--very accurate) go out and buy this right now. If you like really cool games...well, you get the point. If you catch yourself thinking or saying to yourself "Heh, I'm Samus Aran," don't say I didn't warn you. Was this review helpful to you? All Customer Reviews Avg. Awesome Game! , March 5, 2005 Reviewer: A gamer from Connecticut Anyone who is thinking about getting this game, I would definetely say to get it. The graphics are fantastic, the gameplay is second nature, and it is very fun and challenging. Many people have said that this game is too hard and not fun. I would absolutely recommend getting the player's guide. Unless you are a master gamer, you will get stuck more than once. Even if you are a person that doesn't like to get spoiled, keep the player's guide tucked away until you get stuck. I got this game last Christmas and it is 3 months later and I still haven't beaten it. It will give many hours of great gameplay and it will surely give you a lot for your money. I can gaurentee that! Was this review helpful to you? metroid good game of the goodness , March 4, 2005 Reviewer: A 9-year old gamer Metroid prime is very challenging game. Weve got the wavebeam and were only 14 percent done.We fight baby shegoths and space pirates the game of metoid prime will take a long time to beat. Was this review helpful to you?
