The writing tends to be of a higher quality than other magazines and the regular features by John Gierach are often worth the price of admission themselves. While many of the national fly fishing magazines tend to be rather predictable, FR&R will often shake things up. Their product reviews are more than just commercials and the destination pieces attempt to bring out a sense of place, rather than the how, where and when of some genre writing. If I had to offer one criticism, it would be that FR&R tends to concentrate on fishing east of the continental divide. As a west coaster, this can be a bit frustrating, but still, a good read.
