Titans Spirit (Score) Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Denzel Washington stars as a black football coach hired over a white coach at a recently racially integrated Virginia high school in the early 1970s. Director Boaz Yakin ( A Price Above Rubies , Fresh ) has a baby boomer's heart in mind with a stylistic array of early 1970s sounds supported by Trevor Rabin's orchestral score (one seven-minute excerpt, "Titans Spirit," finishes things off here). Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band 's "Express Yourself" is, perhaps, the greatest surprise, while oddball favorites such as Norman Greenbaum 's "Spirit in the Sky," Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," and Eric Burdon and War 's "Spill the Wine" match up with country star Buck Owens 's "Act Naturally." Covers include a fiery version of Sly Stone 's "I Want to Take You Higher" and Leon Russell 's laid-back barrelhouse-piano take on the doomsday anthem "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Cat Stevens 's "Peace Train" rolls into the station in its original version. Creedence Clearwater Revival (who appear with "Up Around the Bend") are outswamped by the Hollies ' imitation of their sound with "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)." --Rob O'Connor Spotlight Reviews (what's this) Write an online review and share your thoughts with other customers. 31 of 36 people found the following review helpful: Remember the 70's? , October 21, 2000 Reviewer: Stitch (see more about me) "Remember the Titians" is a realistic feature that triggers a lot of emotions, and it demands a good soundtrack. But good doesn't even do justice to this; GREAT is more like it1 You'll almost forget you're listening to a movie soundtrack, more like a typical recollection of 70's hits. "Aint No Mountain High Enough" and "Na Na Na Na" steal the show; also noteable are "I Want to Take You Higher" and "Spirit in the Sky". On another note completly, this is one of Disney's best soundtracks for a live action feature EVER--keep it up, Disney! Usually, soundtracks for live-action movies just include instrullmental tracks, and don't appeal to many people as albums to purchase. But this one ROCKS DOWN THE HOUSE! I wish ALL of today's live action movies turned out such good music. Don't you agree? Was this review helpful to you? 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful: Better as a Sample of Music Than the Movie's Personality , June 17, 2002 Reviewer: Troy Hartle (see more about me) from Bellefonte, PA USA If you have read my review of the movie, you are probably going to say: This person does not like this soundtrack just because he does not like the movie. He is messed up. But that is not true. My biggest complaint is that the soundtrack is not very consistent with the movie. The songs in the movie work better for the moment that they occur in the movie, and in some cases, only the mood of the music reflects the current situation. And from listening to this collection, it is hard for me to figure out why songs such as "Up Around the Bend;" "Spill the Wine;" "Spirit in the Sky;" and "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" were put into the movie. But nevertheless, this is still a very interesting sampler of the past several years of music before 1971, the date where the movie is set. It is actually nice to hear all of the songs from this soundtrack here, especially "Peace Train;" "Act Naturally;" "Express Yourself;" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (even if the soundtrack is a little inaccurate; "Long Cool Woman" did not come out on a Hollies album until that December, which occurs after the events of the song's placement). So, who should buy this album? Well, even though this is a pretty good sampler of late 60s-early 70s music, this soundtrack really belongs only to fans of the movie. And judging from their reception of the movie, there are quite a number of fans. Was this review helpful to you? All Customer Reviews Avg. McInerney (see more about me) from Commonwealth I very much enjoyed the film these songs were made a part of and greatly enhanced, and I did but the CD as it brings back great moments from the film. The other reason I bought it was the frequency with which some of these songs have become parts of films, and the number of times I have meant to get them on CD, "Remember The Titans", happily included many of them. The Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell song has been in two films I have seen in the last 3 months, and while the time span is longer, "Spirit In The Sky", by Norman Greenbaum is a song I recall from at least 3 films. The same may be said with different frequency for a variety of other songs on the disc, as all but one have been around for years/decades, with only the final song being specific to the film's theme. So if you enjoy these songs for what they offer on their own or for the memories they bring back from enjoyable films as well, you will be very happy with the many classic pieces of music this soundtrack puts on a single disk. There were one or two songs not included from the film, but I can offer no guess or reason why. Buy this for the score track-it is one of Trevor's best compositions, I am angry there is no score. Fortunatley for me, I was lucky enough to get my hands on an Academy Promo, so I can't complain. For those who aren't so lucky, this 7-minute masterpiece will have to do. Its beautiful, and sad and exciting all in one-what more could you ask for? Listen to the last song only people!! You won't regret it!! If you like Rabin's work, also check out American Outlaws, Deep Blue Sea, The 6th Day and Enemy of the State, a few of his best scores to date, not counting Remember the Titans.
